‘Drinks are on the house,’ said Jolie some two hours later as she handed the one remaining whiskey neat on her tray to the silver-tongued and dangerously appealing Cole Rees. ‘This isn’t from me.’

‘Thank you for explaining,’ he said with the hint of a smile in his eyes that wasn’t at odds with the mood in the room. Wakes didn’t have to be gloomy affairs and this one was shaping up to be anything but. Someone had brought along an old photo album and several of the pictures had Hare in them. There was a story for each one. A toast for each story. And so it went.

Emboldened by her familiar surroundings, Jolie let her gaze linger on Cole’s lips. The smile in his eyes was mirrored there too, and it was a wry thing with too much charm in it for comfort. No wonder women flocked to him and took whatever crumbs he offered. He had the money, he knew how to ratchet up a woman’s desire, and, above all, he had the touch.

Dear Lord, he had an easy touch.

‘You were saying?’ he murmured, and Jolie felt her cheeks turn warm as she wrenched her gaze away from those lips and back to his eyes.

‘No, I was thinking,’ she corrected. ‘Mainly about what you said before. I think,’ she offered carefully, ‘that maybe it was just the circumstances up on the mountain that made what we did seem so … extraordinary. Heightened awareness due to a near-death experience and all that.’

‘It’s a valid theory,’ he murmured. ‘Care to test it?’

‘Not really, no.’

‘Why not? All I’m asking for is a kiss.’

‘Happens I’ve heard that line before,’ she said, and bailed on the conversation by simple dint of heading back to the bar to load up her tray with more drinks.

When she glanced back, Cole Rees was watching her. What was more, he was smiling.
